Bottom Line Decision Making: Knowing Which Path
to Take
A famous philosopher on decision making, Yogi
Berra, said, "When
you see a fork in the road, take it". Often times we
have done that and come to rue the consequences of the choice.
In life we are confronted with many forks in the road, and
are often unsure of what path to go down, e.g., should I
get an advanced degree or not; should I leave this job or
not; should I downsize or not; should I have the operation
or not; should I blow the whistle or not; should I lie on
my resume or not; should I get married or not; should I come
to the ACA conference or not? The reason these decisions
are difficult is because they involve a myriad of factors
with different degrees of importance, e.g., financial, emotional,
sociological, psychological, familial, organizational, along
with tangible and intangible elements. Bottom Line Decision
Making is a way to address this murkinness. It is practical,
easy to understand and apply, relevant to the world of business
and to all others in need of systamatic guidance.
It uses a business investment equation as a metaphor and
follows a simplified accounting process that recognizes the
importance, duration, and probability of each reward and
cost that could flow from a decision. It enables a person
to sort through a morass of interwoven factors by reducing
a complex multivariate collection of a decision's consequences
to the pure simplicity of a single number that is easy to
interpret. The bottom line is a result that helps a person,
when at a fork in the road, to choose which path to take.
